Okay so I went Kayaking for the first time in my life in the waters of Freeport, Maine. I lasted about 45 minutes-and then I was STARVING. So, we docked right at the Harraseeket Lobster Shack, and then we entered heaven. There were butter crusted napkins blowing around the teams of local Maine families tearing into their plated seafood. We got the special "Lobster Delight" 1 pound fresh lobster, 1 dozen steamed clams, and one ear of corn for $22. They wrote our order on a Styrofoam tray, then handed us a number. A few minutes later we were handed back the same tray filled with our food and told if we wanted beer, we'd have to bring our own.
I've never eaten a lobster whole like this before. It comes with several small plastic pitch forks so you can grab the meat out of the little legs-sort of stab it, and then rip it out. The lobster tail was delicious, esp. when you dipped it in melted butter. The clams were fresh-but very sandy. There was a strange liquid on the plate that we kept tasting but couldn't figure out what it was, until after we were all done with the meal and one of the locals said, "that's hot water there, for dipping the clams to get the sand off."
After sharing the above with my partner, I was still hungry. So I ordered the fried haddock fillet sandwich-like a fillet-o-fish, but fresh from the ocean. So f**cking good! I think the best thing about Maine is not the lobster-but the fish sandwiches, they are in abundance and out of this world. Although take note-they often call them "fish rolls" as they call anything in between two pieces of bread that lives in the ocean there.
Ie. Clam rolls (fried clams in a bun), lobster roll (raw chopped lobster w/mayo in a hot dog bun, and shrimp roll (fried shrimp in a bum-oops I mean bun.)
Dessert was standard strawberry cheesecake served in a Styrofoam bowl. Back down the dirt road to our hotel to fall asleep with full bellies watching the democratic convention.
